Empowering Caregivers to Raise Color Brave Kids

EmbraceRace

The Opportunity

Embrace Race, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting caregivers in raising color-brave children, sought Kyndred’s expertise to transform their educational content and digital presence. Our mission was to make their resources more user-friendly and effective.

Research to Insights

We began by partnering with the Reroot Research lab to convert their survey and interview data into actionable insights. This collaborative effort helped us identify key opportunity areas for improving Embrace Race’s content and digital properties.

Insights & Opporutnities:

  • We thoroughly analyzed the research data to articulate clear and actionable insights.

  • From these insights, we highlighted major opportunity areas for Embrace Race to evolve its content and digital properties, ensuring they are more accessible and useful to caregivers.

Design Principles:

  • Working closely with the EmbraceRace team, we identified what they were open to pursuing.

  • We developed guiding principles for the design of solutions that addressed the opportunity areas.

  • We sourced a variety of inspirational ideas from analogs to help visualize how Embrace Race could pursue these opportunities effectively.

Ideation & Prototyping

In the next phase, we focused on generating, refining, and testing innovative ideas to enhance EmbraceRace’s digital tools for supporting caregivers. By engaging both Embrace Race team members and current users in group ideation sessions, we were able to prioritize concepts that would best address their needs. This collaborative approach ensured that the solutions were both practical and aligned with the organization’s goals. We then developed low-fidelity prototypes for these concepts and tested them through co-creation sessions with caregivers, allowing us to gather crucial feedback and refine our ideas to better meet user needs.

Group Ideation Sessions:

Example idea cards developed in our sessions.

  • We facilitated ideation sessions with both Embrace Race team members and current users of their content.

  • These sessions generated numerous ideas, from which we prioritized three key concepts:

    • An interactive card game to help caregivers navigate difficult conversations about race.

    • A digital resource matching process to quickly connect caregivers with the content they need.

    • A modular community conversation toolkit to support local discussions and learning.

  • Additionally, we proposed a comprehensive update to the content taxonomy and navigation on Embrace Race’s website for better organization and accessibility.

Prototype Development:

Sample of the low-fidelity “clickable” prototypes we created for use in the co-creation sessions.

  • We developed low-fidelity prototypes for each prioritized idea.

  • Through collaborative sessions with caregivers, we tested these prototypes, gathering invaluable feedback.

  • These sessions allowed us to refine the prototypes, ensuring they met user needs and preferences.

  • We conducted quantitative analysis involving 120 participants to evaluate the desirability, viability, and feasibility of each concept.

Evaluation and Implementation

After analyzing the feedback and data from the co-creation sessions, we packaged the learnings into detailed concept cards and comprehensive reports. We worked closely with EmbraceRace’s development teams to integrate these ideas into their broader strategy, ensuring alignment with their goals and priorities.

Outcome and Impact

The final deliverables enhanced user experience and engagement with EmbraceRace’s digital content. The collaboration continues as we support Embrace Race in implementing these initiatives. This partnership allowed us to turn complex research into practical, user-centered innovations that will drive meaningful change for their organization.
