Celebrating Hip Hop’s Past, Present and Future

The Gates Preserve | Queens Public Library

Introduction

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip hop, The Gates Preserve, alongside the Queen's Public Library and the Institute for Museum and Library Services, invited Kyndred Company to join them in creating a nationwide, year-long celebration. This involved orchestrating events and initiatives across libraries and museums to honor hip hop's rich history.

Strategy and Execution

National Coalition: We formed a coalition of 40+ institutions, each hosting three to five programs on hip hop's history and impact. A unified calendar provided access to various programs nationwide. We provided coaching and support to every institution featured on the calendar.

Digital Archiving: We designed and assisted in developing a digital archive to preserve and display hip hop history and artifacts for wide accessibility and exploration.

Two-Day Summit: We curated a series of experiences for the summit, including an augmented reality memorial, a virtual photo booth, hip hop documentary streaming, and a community archiving event.

Outcomes

By the end of the year, we curated over 200 programs across the country, resulting in a digital archive that now safeguards 50+ artifacts from this collaborative effort. This nationwide endeavor served to honor, preserve, and extend the legacy of hip hop into the future.
